Let us share with you one of our many successes:

On February 17, 2009 Ms. Smith came to our VITA Site. She is a divorced mother of twin boys age 13. At the time, they lived in a one-bedroom apartment close to the grocery store where Ms. Smith works as a full-time Deli clerk. She is a reliable and responsible parent with a good credit history despite her low wages. Her dream was to buy a house of her own, where she wouldn’t have to sleep on a sofa bed in the living room and where her boys could play outside in a small yard, if only she could save enough for the down payment.

Ms. Smith came to our VITA site referred by her neighbor. Our services enabled Ms Smith to save the $265 tax preparation fee she would have paid at an H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. Ms. Smith was eligible for the CTC child tax credit, additional child tax credit, EITC earned income tax credit and the retirement contribution tax credit. Ms. Smith received a tax refund of $7,509, enabling her to purchase a small two-bedroom house with a ¼ acre yard close to her parents’ home.

As a result of the move, her boys spend more time with their grandparents while they keep a watchful eye on the boys.  They participate in after school track and field and are very happy with this turn of events. Ms Smith is also a calmer, happier person knowing her parents will be looking after her sons while she is at work. She is also thinking about finishing her degree. Ms Smith stated, “Buying my own home has made me realize that anything is possible and I have great hopes for the future!”
